Gallery - Mills on the Air (GB2WWM)
For the annual Windmills on the Air weekend, we operate from Wymondham Windmill using the callsign GB2WWM.
Wymondham Windmill in Leicestershire central England has had a Windmill since at least 1813One of only 4 surviving 6-Patent Sail Mills, this one a Lincolnshire Cross Windmill is built on 5 Levels (Floors), and is mainly from local stone with an Ogee Cap and Fantail, It is believed that a second windmill was also located on the site but was a Brick building,
When the value of the Bricks outstripped the value of the Mill it was demolished and the Bricks sold off at a considerable profit,
The mill as is worked until 1952 grinding corn, and until 1960 grinding cattle feed, Since then there has been much restoration work done and much of the Machinery is still in place, though the mill still has no sails insitu, but the owners have plans to develop and enhance the site, including restoring the mill to working condition.
Leicester Radio Society has "activated" GB2WWM every year since 2009.
